Martz, who produces grain and livestock on a 430-acre farm, was using a pair of 300-gallon tanks on overhead stands for gasoline and diesel storage. The facility, shown on the next page, was typical of systems on many farms. However, while serving on the Boone County Soil and Water Conservation Board, Martz american forge and foundry plasma cutter became aware of its potential environmental hazards."we''ve been on this farm since 1960, and the fuel tanks were put in place about then," says martz. "we haven''t had any major leaks or spills, but it''s easy to see how something like that could happen. the tanks forge we''re putting in are much safer."
[figure 8 omitted]to give the water team and more breathing room, the 3t group suggested that the water team divide the official start of the test into two components: (1) the bwp and the reverse osmosis and (2) the reverse osmosis and the other two subsystems (aes and pps). in the foundry iwrs system, the pivotal subsystem is the reverse osmosis. this system receives bwp effluent, processes it, and provides product water for the two downstream systems. plasma in effect, cutter the bwp is independent of the downstream systems, so it could conceivably be started early when the american downstream systems were still being built. because of the modularity of 3t, the initial iwrs could consist of the first two subsystems, with the output going to drain while the inoculation proceeded, and the second iwrs could include all four subsystems. in this manner, the water team started the test with only the first two subsystems in april 2000 and brought the other two systems online in december 2000 in time to make a january 2001 full start.
the motormost hermetic compressors use induction motors cooled by either liquid or suction-gas refrigerant. induction motors have copper windings that, when alternating current is run through them, create the magnetic fields that cause forge the motor to turn. these copper windings are bulky, and adding size and weight to the compressor.two-pole, 60-hz induction motors operate at approximately 3,600 rpm. a higher number of revolutions per minute can be obtained by increasing the frequency. foundry compressors that require higher shaft speeds tend to use gears. while gears are a proven technology, they create noise and vibration, consume power, and require lubrication.the magnet-bearing compressor features a synchronous permanent-magnet brushless dc motor with a completely integrated variable-frequency drive (vfd). the stator windings found on conventional induction motors are replaced with a permanent-magnet rotor. alternating current from the inverter energizes the armature windings. the stator (excitation) and rotor (armature) change places. no commutator brushes are required. the motor and key electronic components are internally refrigerant-cooled, so no special cooling is required for the vfd plasma or the motor.
